Die Adler, auch als Große Adler, Adler des Westens oder Manwës Adler bezeichnet, waren eine Gattung von riesenhaften Raubvögeln, die von Manwë vor dem Erwachen der Kinder Ilúvatars als Wächter über die Tierwelt geschaffen wurden. Sie waren die edelsten und größten aller Vögel.
Der elbische Satz unter "Thoron" (Adler) bedeutet soviel wie "Die Dunkelheit ist gefallen"

The Eagles were birds that served as messengers of Manwë. Among those were the Great Eagles, immense birds who were sentient and capable of speech, and often helped Men, Elves and Wizards in the quests to defeat evil.
They were sent from Valinor to Middle-earth to keep an eye on the exiled Ñoldor, and on their foe the evil Vala Morgoth.
The elvish Words in the crest under "Thoron" (eagle) means "the darkness is fallen"
